The ruins of Bosselstein Castle, also known as the “Old Castle“ or “Burg Stein“, are located on a rugged rock above the famous rock church in Idar-Oberstein.
It was built in the 12th century by the Lords of Stein, whose descendants fell out violently over the course of the 13th century. The family feud raged for several generations and resulted in the construction of the so-called “New Castle“ (now Oberstein Castle) in the immediate vicinity of Bosselstein Castle before 1330. The new domicile became the seat of the collateral line of the Daun-Obersteins, who became increasingly powerful. In 1435, the inhabitants of Bosselstein Castle finally relinquished their possessions, which passed to the Lords of Daun-Oberstein as a complete fiefdom. By the 18th century at the latest, the older castle had fallen into disrepair.
Even though only a few remains of the keep, the great hall and the curtain wall are still standing today, the climb to the Bosselstein ruins is well worth it. From up here, there is a magnificent view over the town and into the Nahe Valley. Oberstein Castle is just a few minutes away on foot.
